I am in love with no other than myself,

and my very separation is my union ...

I am my beloved and my lover;

I am my knight and my maiden.

When my Beloved appears,

With what eye do I see Him?

With His eye, not with mine,

For none sees Him except Himself.

Ardh al-Haqiqa

Chapter eight of the Futûhât is dedicated to the ard al-haqîqa, the 'World of Reality' that was created with what remained of Adam's clay. It belongs, says Ibn 'Arabi, to the 'âlam al-khayâl, the Imaginal World, and it is part of the barzakh, the 'isthmus' that joins all the orders of reality. This selection is from that chapter.
